South Uist Fishing

Sea trout fishing on South Uist is still one of the best there is with anglers old and new coming to experience what our island shores have to offer.

SOME OF THE BEST FISHING YOU CAN

EXPERIENCE

The machair lochs are renowned for the quality sea trout; some of the best fishing you can experience.

The sea trout lochs of South Uist offer an excellent opportunity to catch salmon as well as sea trout as the Hebridean salmon will readily take a sea trout fly. Salmon and sea trout of up to 10lbs are caught regularly.

Salmon and sea trout run fresh on the tides through out three main systems: Howmore, Kildonan & Bharp.

These fresh water systems are managed carefully, recognising the fragile environment and habitat required for successful spawning.

A fresh run fish from the west coast is as fine a specimen as you are ever likely to see, fish up to 10lbs are not uncommon.

TRULY SPECIAL

Sometimes the fishing can be challenging but the reward from the ariel combat of a sea trout makes the effort more than worthwhile.

There is something truly special about visiting South Uist, the journey, the welcome, the seafood, the beaches, the big sky and some of the freshest air on the planet.

GORDON SUTHERLAND

South Uist brown trout fishing has been described as some of the most exceptional fishing in the world, the secret of such great fishing lies within the alkaline machair lochs.

With only 1% of the UK’s landmass and over 15% of the UK’s fresh water it is no surprise that the Outer Hebrides produce some of the best fishing the country has to offer. With 650 lochs and lochans intricately connecting the islands land mass South Uist holds particular aclaim.

THE MOST EXCEPTIONAL BROWN TROUT FISHING

IN THE WORLD

The machair lochs though fragile environments, offer a very fine class of trout fishing for those who seek both quality and quantity. Their unique shell sand alkaline waters that create the ideal growing conditions for quality brown trout and are universally regarded as some of the best fishing you can experience.

The burns and lochs are not stocked and the lack of fish farms in the western watershed of the islands has kept the gene pool pure. According to local rumour, that the gene pool is so pure it can be traced back to the ice age.
